Tips to Prevent and Control Gnats

Gnats, fruit flies, and similar insects can be annoying, especially in summer. Even though it seems they came from nowhere, gnats enter a living space through open doors, windows, cracks in the walls, poorly installed screens, and similar.

They're drawn by moisture buildup, rotten fruit, trash cans, and any damp areas in the house. For this reason, gnats are typically in the kitchen and bathroom. While getting rid of gnats may be a hassle, there are several steps you can take to prevent a gnat infestation.

Continue reading to learn about the best ways to prevent and control gnat infestations.

Make sure the kitchen is clean

Since gnats are usually found on kitchen counters, near fruit bowls, or around the sink, it makes sense that the kitchen should always be clean. There should be no leftover food on the kitchen table. In addition, leaving dirty dishes in the sink is out of the question. Regularly clean the sink drain and food containers as well. Also, properly clean all fruits and vegetables before being stored away.

Take out the trash more often

Gnats are also typically attracted to trash since there are always some food leftovers. To solve this issue, take out the trash as frequently as possible. Don't let a full trash bag stay in the kitchen for a long time. Not only will this attract gnats, but it will also produce a foul odor.

Remembering to keep the trash can clean is another essential task. Make sure the trash bag is tied when taking out the trash.

Turn off the light

Keeping the light on for no reason wastes energy and increases electricity bills. Light also attracts all kinds of insects, including gnats and fruit flies.

Keep fruit and vegetables in the fridge

Any fruits, vegetables, or food should be kept in the fridge. Doing so doesn't only prevent a gnat infestation, but it also prevents the food from going bad. An additional step is to store fruits and other produce in sealed containers.

When fruit is left at room temperature for too long, it becomes sweeter, attracting more and more gnats. If the fruit starts to decay, it's best to throw it away immediately.

Remove indoor plants from the kitchen

Gnats can be attracted to house plants, or rather the fungus in the soil. If possible, remove all the indoor plants from the kitchen and bathroom. Another option is to replace the soil in the pots regularly.

Install door and window screens

If you don't have door and window screens, this is a sign to install them. They're not an expensive investment, and they properly seal all the house's entrances. Not only do they keep out gnats, but mosquitos, flies, and all the other unwanted pests. Door and window screens have many other benefits, including energy efficiency, additional light, and enhanced safety.

Contact a pest control service

If you already have a gnat infestation on your hands, the best thing to do is hire a pest control service. They'll know what to do and how to get rid of the gnats most quickly and efficiently.
